Q1
Let πππ π be a trapezium with ππ parallel to π π and with ππ = 20, π π = 26 and ππ = ππ = π, for some positive integer π. The length of the diagonal ππ is also a positive integer. What is the maximum possible value of π?
Pythagoras Theorem
Solution
Consider the two right-angled triangles shown, with height β and vertex π. Applying Pythagorasβ Theorem, first to the triangle with hypotenuse ππ
gives 3 2 + β 2 = π 2 (1) and then to the triangle with hypotenuse ππ gives 232 + β 2 = π 2 (2). Subtracting, (2) β (1) gives 232 β 3 2 = π 2 β π 2 . Therefore 520 = (π + π) (π β π). As both π + π and π β π are integers, we can consider the factor pairs of 520. Taking first π + π = 520 and πβπ = 1 produces non-integer values of π and π. Moving to π+π = 260 (3) and π β π = 2 (4) however leads to 2π = 258 and therefore π = 129. Any other factor pairs will have values closer together than 260 and 2 and so will produce a smaller value of π.
